CSUN Is Next Week!

The CSUN Conference on Technology & Persons with Disabilities is happening next week at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott and the Renaissance Montura Hotel. Even if you are not attending conference sessions, you might want to go see the vendor halls. Particularly for those of you in Southern California, it's worth taking aday to visit the exhibits. You will get a chance to see the latest inassistive technology and get all your questions answered directly from the developers and vendors.

The exhibit halls are open Thursday-Saturday (March 13-15), and I would really encourage as many of your disability services staff as possible to visit the exhibits. If you work half day on Friday, you could even carpool over and take a look. After all, it's free!

ATHEN Annual Business Meeting 2007 @ Accessing Higher Ground

Here are highlight notes from the ATHEN business meeting at the 2007 Accessing Higher Ground conference in Boulder, Colorado last week. The full minutes will be posted on the ATHEN website soon enough. ATHEN President Ron Stewart and his official headgear

The election results give us some new officers on the Executive Board:
  • President = Ron Stewart
  • Vice-President = Terry Thompson
  • Secretary = Dann Berkowitz
  • Treasurer = Heidi Scher

In addition - Joe Humbert is taking over as Membership Coordinator.

As for news and business:

  • E.A. Draffan provided an update on the October TechShare conference in the UK. There is a desire to open this conference up to entities outside of the UK.
  • Terry Thompson gave a report on the EduCause IT Accessibility Constituent Group. There is a need for more accessibility professionals to be involved in Educause.
  • Dan Comden gave an update on the postsecondary strand for ATIA Conference. Though very K-12 in nature, ATIA is making efforts to reach out to the higher education community and ATHEN seems to be the conduit for this interaction. BTW - Ron Stewart is a founding member of ATIA.
  • The 3rd edition of the ATHEN Journal will be up on the website soon and the 4th edition is looking for submissions. The theme for #4 is "Who We Are as a Profession"
  • Sean Keegan looking for website content - however, members can add their own information and content to the ATHEN Wiki.
  • Speaking of the Wiki - the survey team has a final draft up on the wiki for inspection and comment.
  • Pratik Patel provided an update on the iTunes U. accessibility project on behalf of Joe Humbert who was off at another conference.

Of course we cannot forget that E.A. Draffan was honored with the first ever Life-Time Honorary Membership to the organization.

She's a very geeky girl...

Poking around the EduCause site while trying to avoid studying -- and considering putting in a proposal for NERCOMP -- I came across a blog posting advertising The She's Geeky (un)conference which will "provide an agenda-free and friendly environment for women who not only care about building technology that is useful for people, but who also want to encourage more women to get involved."

The (un)conference is "designed to provide women who self-identify as geeky and who are engaged in various technology-focused disciplines with a gathering space in which they can exchange skills and discuss ideas and form community across and within disciplines."

Sounds like fun to me -- too bad I did not come across this posting until this weekend -- which also haappenes to be the weekend this event is taking place at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA.

Accessing Higher Ground

My all time favorite conference (and the annual meeting of the ATHEN membership) is the Accessing Higher Ground conference put on by the University of Colorado at Boulder. This is the 10th anniversary and it gets better each and every year. Boulder is beautiful, the hotel is fantastic, the conference is small and the attendees are focused. This is the third year I have attended this conference but it seems like I have been going there forever!

Last year the leadership of Accessing Higher Ground and ATHEN got together and now we are one of the sponsors of the conference. Besides the obvious perks of getting to pick which room to have the annual meeting and the ability to cut into the buffet line with no backsies, it is quite an honor to be so closely associated with this conference. ATHEN also sponsors an educational track of presentations by our members (refer to the conference program for specifi details):

PRE-CONFERENCE SESSIONS
  • The AHEAD Institute on E-Text Production (2 day pre-conference workshop): Ron Stewart, Dolphin Computer Access and Gaeir Dietrich, High Tech Center Training Unit
  • Hardware and Software Players for Digital Talking Books (DAISY): Robert Beach, KCCC

GENERAL SESSIONS

  • Planting Textbooks and Harvesting DAISY: A Model Program for E-Text Production: Daniel Berkowitz & Adam Randazzo, Boston University
  • Planting Textbooks and Harvesting DAISY (part II): A technical demonstration of the Boston University production process: Daniel Berkowitz & Adam Randazzo, Boston University
  • Innovative AT Research at the University of Washington: Dan Comden, University of Washington
  • DAISY for All: Ron Stewart, Dolphin Computer Access
  • Lab: Designing Accessible PDF Forms through Adobe's LiveCycle Designer: Sean Keegan, High Tech Center Training Unit
  • Software Players and Digital Talking Books (DAISY): Robert Beach, Kansas City, Kansas CC
  • STEM and Blind Student- A Survey and Analysis of Current tools, Strategies and Solutions: Saroj Primlani, North Carolina State University
  • Using the Duxbury Braille Translation Software: Gaeir Dietrich, High Tech Center Training Unit
  • Lab: Using Adobe PDF to Create Alternate Media, Gaeir Dietrich, High Tech Center Training Unit
  • Design of an Assistive Technology Online Class: David Schwarte & Joe Humbert, Purdue University
  • Web Accessibility in Higher Education: How Are We Doing?: Terry Thompson, DO-IT, U. of Washington, Saroj Primlani, North Carolina State University
  • Improving Math Access on the Web with MathML-based Web Pages: Sean Keegan, High Tech Center Training Unit

The Key Note speaker for this year is one of my favorite folks working in the Access Technology Field - E.A. Draffan. Trained as a Speech and Language Therapist, E.A. worked for several years within the fields of various communication disabilities before specialising in Dyslexia and Assistive Technology. She has since worked with disabled students in Further and Higher Education, set up an Assistive Technology Centre, trained assessors, developed a database of assistive technologies and is working with a research group at the University of Southampton (UK).

ATHEN Business Meeting @ CSUN 2007

The minutes of the ATHEN business meeting will soon be available on the website. Herein are some highlights. The assembled members formally voted to move the annual meeting (for the purposes of officer elections, bylaw modifications, spending allocations, and the like) to the November Accessing Higher Ground conference Boulder, Colorado. This had been agreed upon at AHG 2006 but needed to be put to a formal vote at the annual business meeting which for this purpose was CSUN 2007.

Speaking of Colorado, Howard Kramer broached the topic of renumeration for the Accessing Higher Ground opening speaker – much to the consternation of E.A. Draffan who was sitting across from him (and would not take compensation for this gig even if pressed upon her such is her support and belief in the work of both ATHEN and AHG). An agreement was reached on a sharing of her travel expenses, hotel, per diem, etc. This kept poor E.A. from having to slink down under the table during any subsequent discussion. Cheers E.A.!

We were treated to a visit by Caroline Van Howe, the Director of Programs for ATIA who invited ATHEN to take on oversight of the postsecondary education strand for their 2008 conference. Dan Comden and Howard Kramer both expressed interest in being responsible. This is an exciting opportunity not only for ATHEN as a whole but individual members. The one drawback immediately obvious is the conference dates (January 30 to February 2, 2008) which coincide with one of the busiest times of the academic calendar. More discussion to follow on the e-mail list.

Apple and the iPod were in evidence at the conference as both sessions and special meetings about the accessibility of iTunesU and iPods were discussed. Tentatively ATHEN is looking to put together a group tasked with exploring this topic and reporting on findings that would be beneficial to both Apple and iTunes institutions. Joe Humbert (that's J-O-E) of Purdue has agreed to lead this effort and will be putting a call out soon for interested assistance.

Terry Thompson also provided an update on the ATHEN survey. Several of the committee met the night before the business meeting - and when Dan Comden was not distracting us - got quite a bit accomplished. A general consensus is that the last survey was a bit large and overwhelming for a single answer session. Plus it touched upon a myriad of areas that - especially at larger institutions - are best informed by different people. The survey itself is being separated into a half-dozen smaller surveys that can be answered by targeted members. In addition, by introducing a short survey every week or two instead of one big one we hope to get a better response rate.

There was brief discussion of the logistics of membership and current members can expect to be contacted soon regarding their status. If any readers of the blog would like information about joining ATHEN, please eMail the membership coordinator at membership@athenpro.org.

AAP Update on Accessible Textbooks

"Phase l of the Association of American Publishers' Alternate Format Solutions Initiative (AFSI) is being completed . The findings and options developed during the initial research phase are to be presented to the AAP's Higher Education publishers for study. The shape of AFSI's Phase II will largely be defined by the results of Phase 1, and the nature of and timetable for Phase ll's next steps are expected to emerge shortly. This session will provide an opportunity for attendees to get updated on the efforts so far and to contribute their insights, pose questions, engage in discussion, and thereby contribute to the AAP's ongoing collaborative effort to develop a practical set of effective solutions to the real challenges of getting textbooks into alternate formats on a timely basis for post-secondary students with disabilities."

Rick Bowes provided a very broad and informative report of where the publishers stand in terms of their interest and comfort with postsecondary DSS alt-text/E-text creation and provision. In general it appears that the two sides are getting more comfortable with each other and the gap is starting to narrow with some concessions on both ends. The publishers look-up service has made locating the right people and communicating with them to get digital files of textbooks much easier - but is not being used as much as they woould like. Though not perfect – this service was and continues to be a concrete example of what the publishers and educators can do when they find common ground. (Not so subtle hint --- this service will only continue and improve if we on the postsecondary disability services side use it and provide appropriate and honest feedback.)

Publishers are looking to implement 'next steps' by mid-year 2007 and are looking to DSS (through Rick) to provide additional information about what we do with the files (both those we produce in-house and those we obtain via the lookup service) and how we workflow both. Rick will be contacting DSS and Higher Education entities in the coming weeks with questions and scenarios for response. All he desires is honest feedback and your questions and suggestions. ATHEN firmly supports the work he is doing and thanks him (and the publishers) whole-heartedly!

The Bel Air room in the LAX Marriott was quite full for this report with attendees and representatives from a good cross section of postsecondary service providers, industry representatives, non-profit entities and other interested parties. Shortly after his presentation, the room was abuzz with the sort of questions and feedback Rick is seeking.

In-hand with this work, AHEAD will soon (Ron hopes) be rolling out the next version of the E-Text Survey [PDF link]. The British contingent (E.A. Draffan and the chaps from the Royal National Institute for the Blind) brought to our attention the work being done across the pond. Gaeir Dietrich summarized a number of issues quite nicely and reminded everyone how fast the technology is moving – for example how well the newest version of Adobe Reader (v. 8) audibly renders tagged PDF. If anyone reading this blog took took notes at the meeting I'd appreciate you sending them to me for posting. Thanks.

One point that Rick got across is that of money. For good or bad – the publishing houses are businesses and they need assurance (and evidence) that at best they are going to see some profit from their efforts and at worst that they will not be throwing money down a hole. The publishers are more and more open to the burgeoning best practices in the field and want to provide what our students need. However, all of this comes with a cost – be it in human resource terms of having publisher based staff to gather materials and create the formatted files – to hardware and software and document storage – to the development of practices on their end from development, to assembly to security to delivery to tracking and on and on. Rick pointed out that if even one of the publishers is able to configure a profit from their efforts then the others will jump on the band wagon “within hours”.

CSUN -- ATHEN [greetings from ... Boston]

Yeah, yeah .. I talked big and didn't deliver. My intent was to post to the blog each day of CSUN. The reality of the situation on the ground was a lack of time. Up early every day and a whirlwind of attending programs, meeting people, visiting vendors, wolfing down food, and socializing. By the time I got back to my hotel room each night I was too wiped to write - it was hard enough checking my eMail (and I had to touch base with the home office each day). A week later I am rested and caught up on both work and family matters and will start posting reflections, notes, observations, etc. This is probably the better scenario - I reread some of the email I sent during the week and it is atrocious! Better to have my wits about me when writing then half-asleep and under deadline.

First Up - ATHEN News:

The minutes from the CSUN meeting should be up on the homepage soon, but here are some hi-lites:
  • Ron Stewart was re-elected as President and made the official announcement that he is leaving Oregon State University to become the VP of North American Operations for Dolphin - or something like that. Ron will also keep his hand-in with AHEAD.
  • We have a Treasurer! Eileen Berger of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education has been elected to oversee the ledger. President Ron has tasked her with exploring options to accept on-line credit card payments for membership dues.
  • The membership present made it official that we would not only support the Accessing Higher Ground conference but that it would become the official annual conference of ATHEN. It was agreed by the leadership of AHG that there will be an ATHEN Track at the conference this year with designs to increase our involvement annually.
  • A reminder that presentation proposals for AHG are currently being accepted and are due by April 21, 2006. [invitation in .doc] [proposal form in .doc]
  • The first issue of the E-Journal with an emphasis on E-Text and Alt-Media Production is now available on-line.

Next Up - CSUN Reports Elsewhere

For those of you who could not make the conference, check out the following sites for a variety of video and audio presentations. But first you must read the very funny BlindConfidential post titled Fear and Loathing at CSUN 2006: Gonzo Fiction. (BC Blogger was kind enough to add the ATHEN blog to his list of favorites)

  • TV Worldwide has a variety of videos from CSUN going back to the year 2000. Not every presentation or product demonstration is available, but quite a few hi-lites and all definitely worth viewing. I'll be pinpointing some of these in future posts.
  • The SpeEdChange blog has a variety of product reviews from CSUN.
  • Axistive was there in full-force and I had a change to meet some of their staff. Nice folks one and all.
  • Jim Fruchterman's March 27 post to the Beneblog is short and sweet and includes audio of one of his talks as recorded by Norm Coombs on a small hand-held digital device. Overall not a bad bit of recording.

UDATE - A bit more CSUN reportage courtesy of E.A. from across the pond.
